Temari
Temari (Christmas Ornaments)

The craft of Temari, embroidered thread balls, is one of the finest folk art that started in Japan five or six hundred years ago. Temari (gteh meaning hands and gmarih meaning balls) was originally made by mothers and grandmothers for children to play with. Childrenfs toy became a fine art form when women of noble households challenged each other to make the best temari, with intricate and detailed embroidery.

Today there are local temari designs documented in different regions in the country. Most of them represent nature (flowers, waves, stars, etc.), while others are purely geometric patterns.

In Japan, the temari is symbolic of good luck and is considered a special gift. At sabi, we carry temari made by a 92 year old lady, Mrs. Hosoi, of Kaga Prefecture. We offer them as limited-time products during the holiday season, from November to December. To pre-order, please contact us at 310.451.7280 or via email at info@sabistyle.com.
